Primary Sample Preparation Techniques
Course Details
This module takes an initial look at the science behind the most commonly used sample preparation techniques.
By the end of this unit, you should be able to explain the concepts of protein precipitation, choose appropriate extraction approaches for various analyte and sample matrix types, decide when to use centrifugation (or ultracentrifugation) and understand what can be achieved, identify situations in which simple sample preparation techniques (dilution, filtration, centrifugation etc.) are sufficient to overcome practical problems.
Topics include:
- Primary sample preparation techniques
- Sample dilution
- Sample filtration and ultrafiltration
- Centrifugation and ultracentrifugation
- Protein precipitation
- Extraction approaches to sample preparation
- Selectivity
- The partition coefficient
- Liquid/liquid extraction
- Support-assisted liquid/liquid extraction
- Solid phase extraction
