CHROMtalks - (More) Steps Toward Easier Method Development for Two-Dimensional Liquid Chromatography

Anyone who has ever developed an HPLC method from scratch knows that a lot of time can be spent making changes along the way as a result of trial-and-error-based decision making. This can include, but is not limited to, choosing columns, mobile phases, and operating conditions. When developing a two-dimensional liquid chromatography (2D-LC) method, this problem is compounded, with twice as many decisions to make, in addition to the interactions between parameters used for the first and second dimension separations. In this presentation I will review and discuss results from my group and others that are moving the chromatography community in the direction of easier method development for 2D-LC. Although Dwight thinks truly “easy” method development will not be realized in routine use for quite some time, recent work is moving in that direction in meaningful ways, and all 2D-LC users can all accelerate this progress by leaning in to the effort.
